According to the EPA, there is no safe level of lead in drinking water. Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups, especially pregnant people, infants (both formula-fed and breastfed), and young children. Some of the health effects to infants and children include decreases in IQ and attention span. Lead exposure can also result in new or worsened learning and behavior problems. The children of persons who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy may be at increased risk of these harmful health effects. Adults have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or nervous system problems. Contact your health care provider for more information about your risks.
Galvanized pipes are steel pipes coated with zinc to prevent rust and deterioration. A galvanized plumbing or service line by itself is not a concern. To be a galvanized requiring replacement (GRR), the galvanized plumbing line must have been downstream of a lead service line. Given that a GRR is related to the plumbing line, it will be the responsibility of the property owner to replace.
The water company will develop a replacement plan for any lead service line but any plumbing line replacement will be the responsibility of the property owner. If you would like to know your plumbing material ahead of time you can call a certified plumber or check your plumbing line using guidelines from the EPA. You can also check any previous home inspection reports to see what’s listed for plumbing material. Please report back any findings so we can update our inventory.
